Lose Weight Swimming

Exercise is important in any weight loss program. Eating less calories and burning calories has the same effect in losing weight. An often overlooked exercise is swimming.
Part of the problem is access to a pool. The benefit of swimming over ground based exercise is less wear and tear on your body; especially weight-bearing joints.

Swimming is a great aerobic exercise. Therefore you receive all the cardiovascular benefits that you receive from any form of exercise. So being aquatic helps with many health conditions like, hypertension, high cholesterol, diabetes, as well as heart disease.

Remember our Olympian Michael Phelps? He reportedly would eat around 5000 calories while training for the big event. That is 2500-3000 calories more, per day, than the average man should eat in a day. So competitive swimming can burn a lot of calories.

If you wish to start swimming for exercise you should start slowly and build up your endurance; like any other form of a work-out. Swim for 30-60 seconds and then rest for the same amount of time. When you get your endurance up work on your speed per lap and swim for 5-15 minutes before taking a breather. The faster your lap time the more calories you burn.
